Travel considerations

DO BEFORE NYC
  • Alert your bank what days you will be traveling to New York. This will help ensure you don’t run into problems with your credit/debit cards while away from home.

  • Bring cash in smaller denominations for tipping and small meals from street vendors.

  • Plan to tip these service providers: taxi drivers, bellhops, concierge, housekeeping, waitstaff, and coat checkers. Tour guides and charter bus drivers are tipped by Muse Machine staff.

  • Alert family members of your trip and how to get a hold of you while you're away.

  • Read through your ATTS materials!

AIR TRAVEL
  • Group flight leaves DAY at 9:45 AM on Tuesday. Please allow plenty of time (at least 1 ½ to 2 hours) to get checked in, bags checked and through security.

  • Remember the Liquids Rule: 3-1-1 for Carry-Ons

  • The weight limit for checked bags is 50 lbs. The first checked bag is $30 and the second is $40. You will be responsible for this fee.

  • Visit the TSA website at www.tsa.gov for more information.

DON'T FORGET TO BRING
  • Pen and paper to take notes throughout ATTS activities

  • Charging cables for all devices

  • A compact umbrella

  • Sunscreen

  • Eyeglass repair kit, if applicable

  • All your medications and prescriptions in your carry-on and NOT your checked luggage

  • Comprehensive NYC packing checklist

SUBWAYS, TAXIS & BUSES, OH MY!
  • Walking is always the cheapest option.

  • New York's subway and bus system is called the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority).

  • You can buy a MetroCard or tap and go using the cashless OMNY system to buy fares.

    • Single rides on the subway or bus are $2.75.

  • In addition to simply hailing a cab, you can use the Curb app to request and pay for a yellow taxi.

    • Taxis can become expensive quickly. It is more cost-effective to split the fare with a group.

  • Travel with a buddy.

FOOD IN THE BIG APPLE
  • The opening and closing meals on ATTS will be provided by Muse Machine. Bring money to pay for the remaining meals.

  • Average price range for meals: Breakfast $5-10, Lunch $10-20, Dinner $25-50

  • Making reservations, whenever possible, is highly recommended.

  • Lots of street vendors sell excellent food for quick and convenient meals.

  • Delis also have good food options which are less expensive than sit-down restaurants.

  • Be prepared for large dining groups to be presented with only one check. Restaurants are sometimes willing to divide up a large check, but not always

WHAT TO WEAR
  • Wear comfortable shoes.

  • New York City weather is highly variable. Daytime temperatures can be as high as 80 degrees during the day with evening time lows in the 60’s.

  • The theatres can be cold. Bring a sweater or jacket to possibly wear during shows.

  • Jeans and shorts are not appropriate New York theatre attire.

  • Each day has been designed FULL of activities. Please be aware that once you leave the hotel in the morning, it is imperative that you are dressed appropriately for the day’s activities and that you have everything you will need for that day (i.e., theatre tickets, umbrella, sunscreen, etc.)

SAFETY
  • Be careful with purses and wallets. Cross-body bags and over-the-shoulder bags are best.

  • Hold bags close to your body, DO NOT leave bags unzipped.

  • Always have a “buddy.” Never go somewhere alone. If there is an emergency or you become ill, please let one of the staff know immediately and they will make sure you are taken care of.
